Project Coralina

Coralina Farms is our 100% organic farm development project located 28km outside of the Nagua region in the Dominican Republic. Coralina Farms produces all of the Cacao used for Cacao Prieto chocolate and our chocolate based Rums and Liqueurs. The Coralina Farms Project is the center for our ongoing investigations into the science of cacao and our goal to revolutionize organic and self sustainable farming methods to advance the state of the art in Cacao cultivation.

Coralina Farms is now in the process of expanding by 2000 hectares. The base farm was planted with coconut trees almost 50 years ago and farmed according to organic standards by the extended Prieto family. While those coconut trees are now past their productive prime, our cacao trees remain strong and healthy; thus we will be replacing almost 300,000 coconut trees to make way for 2,000,000 new Cacao trees.

This is an enormous and exciting project of such a scale that is hard to imagine. But, the scope of this project is certainly matched by the size of our hopes, our dreams, our skills and aspirations. We aim to make Project Coralina into one of the most innovative farming endeavors in the country. In doing so, we will be building a city for 1600 employees with schools, churches and social services included. To construct this city, we will be turning to the materials given to us by the farm itself to extract total self-sufficiency; hence, we are building a sawmill to turn those coconut trees into lumber and a brick factory to produce bricks from the red clay present on the farm. What is not extracted as lumber from the coconut trees will be used for central composting and as fuel for a group of biochar kilns  that will produce clean energy for the farm by converting char into methane to fuel our power grid.

Coralina Farms will also be a center for our investigations into the science of Cacao and our quest for the preservation of bio-diversity if the Dominican Republic. We have the created the largest germ plasma repository for white cacao in the world and we are constructing a new tree nursery capable of producing 2,000,000 trees per year. We believe that Coralina will be a center of science exchange and research as relates to plant molecular biology and we will have the laboratories to facilitate that exchange.

Coralina Farms is a working farm with the straight-forward goal of providing the finest cacao in the world for our products, it is also an ideal, a lofty aspiration for creating something that makes the world a better place. By being able to transform an agricultural region into a living workshop of organic self-sufficiency, Coralina Farms is building a blueprint for the future of ecologically and socially responsible agricultural businesses.
